It is #FosterFateFriday, only this time our foster dog is the one that picked her home π. For dogs like Winnie, it is not easy to trust. However, once she learned to trust, it was clear she was where she was meant to be β€οΈ.
Many would look at Winnie and think she is nothing special π. Many would wonder why a purebred rescue travelled hundreds of miles to pick get a mutt off the streets? This dog isn't a Doberman, she isn't a purebred, she's like the many others trying to survive. Our answer? She needed us and that is our first priority πΎ.
Winnie survived on the streets, for what we suspect, was most of her life. When the shelter trapped her, they found out Winnie was heart worm positive and pregnant. She was scheduled to be euthanized π’. We were contacted about Winnie and knew we would have over 5 months of caring for Winnie as she went through her heart worm treatment. During that time, we knew she would not be able to be adopted, but we jumped into action and went to get her π.
Once Winnie's puppies were adopted, she then began heart worm treatments, but more importantly, she started to learn about being a pet πΆ.
At first Winnie stayed to herself, she was never difficult, but just aloof. Then she started to follow the other dogs of the home around and just hang out with them. Winnie was finding her place in the pack.
Then a month ago, Winnie decided at bedtime she was going to join the rest of them in the bedroom and she took over a chair. She was closer then she had ever been before to true comfort and family, but she still kept her distance. Then it happened π³! Winnie jumped into bed with all the other dogs and found a spot to curl up next to her foster mom β€οΈ. The sound of contentment that came out of her little body broke her foster mom's heart.
To hear that sound from a dog that has never known love and security from humans, and for her to let her guard down to trust, made her foster mom decide that Winnie was home and would never feel abandonment again π₯°.
Sleep well tonight Winnie, as you are wrapped in the warmth of love from all of us who have been apart of your journey π‘.
