DU Director Gwen Bamer-Flynn with Her Pet Doberman in the Park

I started off in rescue like most others adopting a dog and then wanting to help.

I started fostering female dogs because I was comfortable with that and then I got a call asking if I would foster a male dog. I said okay, hesitantly, and then they said “He is blind”. What? I have no idea what to do with a blind dog but then they told me his name was Riddick and I love Vin Diesel so that was all it took.

Riddick taught me so much about dogs, about how they don’t focus on a disability, how their own limitations are what WE as humans put on them. Being a good foster home, I took Riddick month after month to adoption events but I realized that he was my heart dog and eventually I adopted him.

Riddick taught me about why rescues are so important and why I needed to get more involved to help other dogs like him with disabilities, with age, with imperfections and with perfection that are in horrible situations they all needed us.

Finding Doberman Underground and the freedom to rescue dogs from states outside of Ohio and the freedom to take in dogs with severe medical cases pulled at me because of Riddick.

Today we have grown this rescue from 5 volunteers to over 150 in multiple states and have helped over 750 dogs find their forever homes and I feel honored everyday to have been a part of this with the village of people helping every step of the way.
