Today is "National Lost Dog Awareness Day". Despite the fact that many dogs do live in loving homes, they are naturally curious and sometimes like to create their own adventures by escaping into the free world.
Although we all know accidents do occur, we want to share some tips for preventing these by keeping your dog safe and secure:
~ Keep them in a fenced in yard while outside and ensure all areas of the fence are in good condition, leaving no areas to escape. Make sure all latches and gate entries are secured in a manner to prevent your dog from being able to open them (we all know they are smart and can be crafty ~ AKA LilHoudini's).
~ If you do not have a fenced in yard, a tie out can be used, but please make sure you are using one with the appropriate weight limit.
~ Keep an eye on your pups at all times when outside. It truly only takes a second for them to get themselves into mischief!
~ Use a secure leash when walking your pups (NOT retractable leashes). Martingale collars are also recommended.
~ Make sure you close your doors completely when exiting your home, and taking precautions when entering or allowing guests in. Additionally, teach any children in the home the importance of proper safety measures. They will love to have an important role!
~ Obedience training is a great tool in communicating with your dog to have them stop on command, come to you, etc.
We also recommend getting your dog mirochipped and registered, and making sure your contact information is always current.
A current ID tag is also beneficial if your dog gets lost while wearing their collar.
Most of us keep our phones loaded with pics of our furbabies, which is also helpful as current photos are beneficial if your pup takes a solo adventure.
Dogs count on us to keep them safe, and we owe them the same love and devotion they give!!
